Elaine Clarfield-Gitalis
graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1969 with a major in
textile design. Woven tapestries evolved into paintings by 1985.
For Elaine,
inspiration begins with an idea, or a resonance of creativity from
within and reaches outwards, resulting in a completed painting.
I have been creating high realism paintings for the last few
years and recently became aware that I wished to revisit working in
an abstract manner. Consequently, I felt inspired to begin painting
the Morphous Series.
The vocabulary of a realistic painting is the subject itself,
appearing in the forms of flowers, fruits, landscapes, figures etc.
However, when painting a non-representational or abstract canvas,
the artist creates a new, personal language that she utilizes to
express her feelings and inspirations. The viewers are then free to
formulate their own interpretations of the works.
The word morphous is derived from the Greek word morphos meaning
shape and the verb to morph means to change shapes. In this series,
bold shapes change through multiple transitions. Layered linear
elements, repeat the character of these bold shapes creating a sense
of transparency that gives the illusion of depth. The pure hues of
the linear elements contrast with the more subtle colours of the
underlying shapes and these lines give each piece its own unique
sense of rhythm.
Organic shapes in nature are universal. Pebbles in ponds and
rivers, boulders in the landscape, cells multiplying and seeds
gestating, provide inspiration that move me to paint personal
interpretations of both microscopic and macroscopic worlds.
Although I begin with a planned sketch, the paintings evolve
organically, emulating dynamics in nature. Each step is revealed to
me as the work evolves and for that reason the paintings are built
up in many layers.
